ABOUT

Location: Ljubljana, Slovenija
Author: Primož Jeza
Investor: Private

Concept:
A space for fashion victims. The investor is a brand of “transition” tradition, owning several stores of man’s and women’s fashion clothing. They require an interior that can be easily redesigned – recycled. They constantly seek new brands, adapt to the market, introduce new clothing lines. Project fashion. I design a retail studio with selling surfaces enough anemic to be easily transformed and completed with a few accents. A kind of spatial chameleon for trading experiments.
The first main role of the interior was the children’s store, Avantgarde Junior, selling clothing by Calvin Klein. Although the project task was clear, the basic question could not be avoided. What does a fashion brand mean to children? What is “shopping” for children? Who goes shopping? …

The result. A space intended for parents and not too disturbing for children. Some spatial-technological tricks. I chose the color of unripe fruit. Soothing.

Function:
We enter the interior through the display window. The first, main room is surrounded by display surfaces. The space for the shopkeeper is located in the left corner of the first room. It is enclosed with the counter – a console around which all his tools for working are mounted. In the center of the store, I mount a rotating platform that can stop in the required position if necessary (e.g. oriented towards the plasma screen where cartoons are screened), holding a deckchair and a gaming console (game-boy). The second, latter room is intended for two changing rooms and handy storage.
The second main role (concept 2) for the interior is the store Avantgarde N9 selling the shoe brand Miu Miu and fashion accessories.
Associations on the raw, untreated tanned hive. Of color beige…
The structure of the shop (function 2) remains the same. I remove the rotating platform with the deckchair and replace it with a single-move multifunctional object held by consoles (as a chair for trying on shoes, the base for shoe mirror, display window for accessories, and handy storage in its insides). Certain selling surfaces are covered by glass. I don’t participate in concept 3 and all the subsequent transformations.

Situation, original state of the space in question:
The interior is located in the old part of Ljubljana on the trade street in the vicinity of the city hall. Before acquiring the trade role, space was used as a craft workshop. The entrance vault – façade (the current display window) used to have a stone and previously a wooden filling. Due to various periods and reconstructions, the walls of the space are of mixed composition. Located near to the castle hill (moisture, erosion of the slope) and in the extreme shade, the object had very poor construction parts.

Materials:
Epoxy, plaster panels, medium-density fiberboard, stainless and colored steel, polycarbonate, natural and artificial leather.

ABOUT

Location: Ljubljana, Slovenija

Investor: Private

Concept:
Furniture? Practical companions in life, objects of desire or merely tools to defy and resist the forces of gravitation. The year 2001 is nearing. Odyssey 2001. Where or what went wrong? The daily politics, the lobby of the dated but still profitable technology. Prognosis? We should be modern nomads, we should so-to-speak colonize the universe. All should be in one, should be one. Sophisticated. Clothing, chair, mode of transport, bed, working position… None of it. We live in cubes, cuboids, some of us in babels, tents, caves… We still use practically the same pieces of furniture as the Egyptians, Greeks, Romans… The contemporary residential culture (again) doesn’t treat furniture only as useful items, but considers its added value and sometimes fetishist power. But that is all.

Project task and questions as well as goals:
What should the place who sells furniture be like considering the imminent prophetic year 2001? How is it possible to minimalize the laws of statics visually, to fake them in a symbolic way? To simulate the space of weightlessness and play with furniture that should present something new or modern despite its Roman origin. Using light and color I blur the two spatial planes thus reducing the subordination to the G force in a visual way. I lighten the borders so that the vertical and the horizontal are merging – not joining. The borders of the space merge below the “flowing light” and…

Function:
The retail studio is conceived as a contemporary bourgeois apartment and not a retail warehouse featuring e.g. four kitchens, five bedrooms, eight living rooms… Its function is to show the display items of Poliform furniture in their actual role as actors in the ambient design of the living environment. Thus when entering the showroom we enter the extroverted daily living room of the apartment (placed in the display window). This is followed by a connecting hallway shaped as the working cabinet in the apartment, serving as the technical support of trade in Abitare studio. This is the space that I provide with basic equipment (working semi-armchairs, a desk, and a free-standing computer unit). Upon the end of the hallway, the ambient turns into a more introverted part of the apartment with an intimate daily living room, which at one side continues into a bedroom with a changing room and at the opposite side into the dining room and kitchen.

Situation, original state of the space in question:
The interior is situated in an old part of the town, beside the Ljubljanica River. Space was used by one of the city bakeries as a small production unit and a shop. Before the intervention into the premise, its area and its real volume were unknown. Approximately a quarter of the space was taken by built industrial ovens and another quarter by various functional divisions. Space has three windows at the backside, oriented towards the inner (unfortunately not arranged) yard. In the place of today’s display window of Abitare studio, there used to be entrances to the shop and bakery. The bakery entrance today presents the main entrance. Due to a historical layering of the building the premises feature several construction systems. Various construction materials have been used: stone, wood, brick, concrete.

Materials:
Polyester, carbon, aluminum, glass.

PROPAGANDA

PROPAGANDA

DATE

ABOUT

Location: Ljubljana, Slovenija
Author: Primož Jeza
Investor:
Private

Concept:
The transition from analog into the digital world. Encounter (or exchange) of punk and cyberpunk generations. The club program working through devices in a cybernetic loop between the TV and PC (TV>PC>TV…) and free access to the Internet enable immediate polarisation of the information “sold” – the propaganda message. The interactivity of the installed technology, the metal polychrome, and electronic music should add to the technicist spirit and cosmopolitan character of the club. The digital operation of machines is fetishized, not appearance. Cyberfetish.

Function:
The program of Klub Propaganda was that of a cyber café, a multimedia space that was designed for (profitable) execution of interactive advertising on the internal television. Its operation was based on a video base and an online network. Other types of propaganda were implemented via a light scanner, endless tape (built into the counter), posters, and sound recordings. At night the daily advertising program turned into an urban club scene with electronic music.
The exterior longitudinal sidewall of the club (along Grablovičeva street) communicated with its environment via its mounted (interactive) advertising spaces with monitors, equipped with keyboards placed on draw tables. The entrance door featured a screen informing about the activity inside the space without the need to enter. The interior entrance wall was designed as the program generator of the space. Sections that had the function of seats or the so-called operator positions, in front of which there were longitudinal storage surfaces with inbuilt keyboards, dictated the rhythm and shaped the volume of the club. The wall opposite held monitors, on which interactive advertising program was executed, as well as seats and the counter service. The latter merged with the flooring because of its color, which additionally emphasized the metal monochrome of vertical surfaces. In the transversal left-side wall, there were entrances to toilet facilities and service premises of the interior. The opposite wall, bordering the vertical communications of Orto Bar, used its rotating screen to assume the task of informing about the club program.

Situation, original state of the space in question:
Same as Orto Bar, Klub Propaganda was located in the Zmaj factory complex. The entrance to the interior was posed alongside Grablovičeva street (towards Vodmat neighbourhood). In its original state, space was divided several times and had various functions (production, warehouse…).

Materials:
Epoxy, polished aluminum, stainless and colored steel, galvanized steel, artificial leather, glass.

Location: Ljubljana, Slovenija

Concept:
To create an interior as a social hybrid. Excerpts of music, film, theatre-performance, fashion, literature, politics, and the comprehensive visual aesthetics of the adolescence of generations born in the late 1960’s. To visualize the zeitgeist or the fuel of the Slovenian velvet revolution in its stormy form of youth (street guerrilla) culture. For such a space “in time”, the fetish for material and for the event is required. For each turn of the ventilator, the reflection of chrome and stainless steel, the sensibility of velvet, the projection of shadows and film sequences, and searing of guitars with the power of a visual destination. From the sociological viewpoint, Orto bar should be an artifact – a product of the subculture of the 1980’s in the spirit of a selective – critical selection of media.

Function:
We enter the bar from the factory yard through an oval entrance designed like some mental converter between the industrial environment and the “sacred” space that only surprises you the first time. As you enter Orto, you know what it’s going to be like. Apart from the optional socializing beside the intentionally oversized counter, minor events take place in the bar, including concerts, film and video screenings, fashion shows, book, and CD promotions… For such events, a small multipurpose stage with a sound and light system and the projection screen has been built at the exposed far side of the interior. In the case of a “non-event”, the screen assumes the role of a live wall, a partner that never leaves you alone. The program is followed by a directed light set and the “travel” ventilators are turned on. Seats and standing room are arranged in the space in levels and positions appropriate for keeping track of the (potential) program.
Service facilities are partly placed on the same floor as the bar, with the majority placed in the cellar. In the summertime, the bar extends to the platform in front of the building.

Situation, original state of the space in question:
The complex, in which Orto bar is positioned, is located at the brink of the city center, bordering the Vodmat residential area with two sides whereas the other two are marked by the very busy Šmartinska road and the similarly busy railway. The interior is integrated into the long-abandoned battery factory Zmaj, some kind of a “maternity ward” for industrial products that besides the portable pocket technique generated many mechano dreams – products for children.
Space featured a uniform volume and, due to its construction period, a wooden ceiling. The primary material was brick. One of the longitudinal external sidewalls (oriented towards the factory yard) featured two large industrial windows. The access to the interior and the vertical interior communication have remained unchanged.

Materials:
Velvet, chrome and polished stainless steel, wood.
